Beaufort Inlet, batik on silk, 50” x 91” diptych

Project: Duke University Marine Laboratory, Beaufort, NC

In 1993, Mary Edna Fraser began working with Orrin Pilkey. They have produced two books illustrated with her batiks on silk, A Celebration of the World’s Barrier Islands, Columbia University Press, and Global Climate Change: A Primer, co-authored with Keith Pilkey, Duke University Press. This art is dedicated to Orrin and Sharlene Pilkey and their family. Fraser and Pilkey’s collaboration began on Shackleford Island, shown on the bottom right of the silk. Beaufort, the Rachel Carson Reserve, and Morehead City are featured behind the ocean and inlet. All of these beautiful vistas can be seen through the windows surrounding the viewer where the batiks is installed at the Duke Marine Laboratory.
